The latest

My sources are telling me that mark Fox is no longer a viable candidate. He recently told his McD's AA recruit at Nevada, Luke Babbitt, that he is not leaving and will be at Nevada next year. While this is far from definitive, it doesn't inspire confidence.

Jay Wright has a large buyout from Villanova which is not making it easy for Cal to close the deal. It's time for Cal alums to step up and land a coach who would instantly vault the Bears into the upper echelon of college programs. Wright's three sweet sixteen appearances, his three McD's AA recruits and mostly the fearless and back down from noone attitude that his teams play would be a perfect fit in Berkeley.

If Fox is indeed out of the mix and Cal alums cannot find the dough to land Wright, it may come down to Randy Bennett and Mike Dunlap. Both would be risks and neither is likely to establish the immediate credibility you want to energize potential recruits and bring fans back to Haas.

i can only pray we have some hope w/ a big time coach. tony bennett, wright would be great. fox would be a-ok. randy b and dunlap,...no bueno.

i think we should look at a triad from the acc....skinner, hewitt and greenberg. all would have name recognition, can recruit, and coach up the current cal players.

If we get Dunlapp or Bennet we are in bad shape.

I can see Jay Wright now:

Damn, I'm from Philly, Villanova is my home town team, my wife went here, our families live nearby, they give me everything I want at Nova, but....

I just wish I could go to Cal for and take a paycut!!

Cal will not pay their next coach more than Jay Wright currently makes ($1.5+ mill). The buyout has nothing to do with why you cannot land Wright. Cal is not as good a job as Villanova, and Jay is a Philly job.

Seriously, if Jay turned down interview requests from traditional powers with more money than Cal (Kentucky, Indiana, NC State), why would he even entertain Cal?

This blog is too funny.

I'm not even a Nova fan. I'm a Saint Joseph's (PA) fan. But if you think Jay is leaving Villanova any time soon, you don't know Philly hoops. Jay wouldn't even leave Nova for UCLA, nevermind Cal.

Jameer,

I wish you were wrong and Wright was our new coach but instead we hired Mike Montgomery. That said, a couple of facts for you to ponder. Mike will be getting a contract that pays him over $1.65M a year at Cal in base salary. Jay makes $1.3M including all the radio and other perks. Jay's wife actually has significant family from the Bay Area and was a large impetus for him to entertain the job. Villanova is a better program than Cal right now, St. Joe's is as well But neither has the potential that Cal does. It's simply a matter of the prestige of the university, the size of the school, the location and the money involved. Witness hiring a coach far more expensive and prestigious than Mr. Wright.
